I completely agree with your suggestion that we use both systems, for both your reasons and some of my own. In the end, I don't really care what's selected if it's just for officialisms (e.g. "The documents will be published on A4 sized paper," etc.) but I fear that a declaration of an official scheme of measurements will eventually create a metric-only environment. A baseless fear, probably, and there's definitely a hint of the "slippery slope" fallacy in my thinking.

Like you, I see no point in arguing the supremacy of one system over another. There are faults with both and advantages in both.

There might be something to be said for having our very own system of measurement, eh what? Cubits and dactyls or whathaveyou. I will leave that question to wiser heads than my own.
