Just for the record, I'm going to put in my understanding of the Imperial system. (NZ uses only the metric system; the Imperial system may have been mentioned in school, but I was taught only how to use metric.)
I know that a yard is about the same as a metre. A metre is easy to estimate; it's about the same as a long stride.
I have no idea how many yards are in a mile, nor how long a mile is, except that it's longer than a kilometre.
I know an inch is 2.5cm, and I sometimes use inches when referring to things like how much I want the hairdresser to take off my hair, or similar short distances. I don't tend to use inches for talking about lengths any longer than 6 inches or so.
I know that ' and " are used for feet and inches, but I don't know which is which.
I know that there are 12 inches in a foot, but I don't know how many inches or feet are in a yard.
I roughly know my height in feet and inches, but it's not as exact as my height in centimetres.
Volume- and weight-wise, I have absolutely no clue. There's um...pounds and pints, right? Oh, and ounces. I have no idea how much any of these is, nor what their equivilent is in litres, millilitres, kilograms or grams.
Fahrenheit is a bit of a mystery to me. I only know that it intersects with celcius at about -40, and that 93 degrees is the same as 37 degrees celcius, and I only know that from American books and TV shows which talk about people having fevers!
