Yes, they work, but it doesn't remove old pages from the database.

That is impossible per se. You can ask, in robots.txt, the spiders not to spider your site, but if it is an old domain, it will remain online.

Want the best solution ? Password protect the directory. Your host has a password protection system in it's Control panel which allows you to assign username and passwords ( or a common one ).
That way, you can control who accesses your site and who doesn't.
