Each voter would get as many votes as there are seats to be filled, and can allocate each vote to one candidate from any of the lists. A quota is calculated (no. of votes/seats), and the candidates who get more votes than the quota are elected. Its a kind of cumulative voting, its used in Luxembourg and Switzerland as part of their (admittedly unusual) list PR systems.

It is used in communal elections in a variety of German federation states, too, amongst them Hesse. One disadvantage of panachage might be that even more than in our current system people who actually don't want to play a (leading) role in politics might get prominently elected, quasi "against their will". Same goes for write-in votes.
