I once addressed a Finnish friend of mine, who speaks Swedish, "Fröken". I don't know if this is the correct spelling, but at least people who are accustomed to understanding the northern dialects of German will see the similarity to "Fräulein". I did it to tease her, assumedly in good fun.

But she's a feminist of the old 70s school, and she really got mad at me. "This is 'fru'," she exclaimed, "ich bin eine Frau und kein Fräulein!" (I am a woman and not a little woman.)

That's what you usually get when using "Fräulein" in metro areas of West Germany. I can't speak for l'Allemagne profonde, because I'm only a tourist there.
