    I have to admit that I'm not very deep into German dialects, but in the wider southwestern region where I am living "Hinkel" doesn't mean anything but rooster. Figuratively, calling someone a "Hinkel" isn't strongly pejorative (like coward), it's more like describing some moderate physical fragility.

    I can't explain the giggles of the exchange student, though. It must be some habit that is not related to last names, I guess. ;-)
