I know that many people are disapproving, upset or even outraged at this bill. I can only repeat what I said when I introduced it: "The crippling fear of doing anything controversial or unpopular is the cancer that is killing Talossa". There is a nasty habit of "informal consensus" in this Republic - that if any serious opposition is raised towards an idea, the proponents have a tendency to back down. This essentially means that virtually nothing ever happens. My personal theory is that this is a national "gunshyness", based on a Talossan history of nasty personal abuse infecting our political discourse. If we really want our nation to become as vibrant, challenging and fun as the history books say it once was, we have to learn to stick to our guns even when people are offended by our ideas; and to learn that being offended by at someone's ideas can never be allowed to translate into personal vendettas against that person. We must also learn that in our democracy, a law - or even a constitution - which passes can always be repealed, given sufficient political will.
In fact, Mr Speaker, I kind of hope that the citizens of Pórt Maxhestic organise themselves to prevent - or even a little way down the track, reverse - the merger. The theory is that only active provinces should exist. I flatter myself that our "sabre-rattling" attitude towards merger is primarily responsible for the current healthy state of Florenciâ's provincial culture, so I hope that those guys forgive myself and Governor dàl Már eventually.
