I have considered for a long time that, while it will be great to adopt a panoply of national symbols, it would be a huge waste of scarce legislative time for the Chamber to have to argue a bill on what's going to be the official Beatles record of the Talossan Republic or whatever. Therefore, I propose an act which will give the Government the right (by Executive Order) to set such things. You can see it for yourself in the Chamber of Deputies.
2) HARD-COPY EMBLEMS OF STATE
The ZRT manifesto for the Fifth Chamber suggested that the Republic raise funds to pay for (a) a Presidential sash; (b) a Seal of the Republic; (c) real ID cards for every citizen; (d) keeping the PO Box (funded by Eif, last I heard) open. The total budget was, I think $100US. I suggest we go with these great ideas - it would be up to the Finance Minister to work out a budget.
3) POSTER COMPETITION
I would love to get the populace involved in promoting the Republic with a Patriotic Poster competitition - the winner to be put on the front page of talossa.com for National Day (26 December). I would suggest three potential themes:
"La Repúblicâ, C'è Va Talossa" (The Republic - it's my Talossa)
"Så Vivádra Talossa Democrätic" (Long Live Democratic Talossa)
"Citaxhiens tra la Tzarâ - Viêns Éstat" (Citizens Around the World - One State)
4) MONEY
Eric designed a beautiful 1 itrì banknote with Grubi on it. This makes me even more determined that we should print banknotes and sell them at a large premium from their face value. This would be brilliant advertising. I also note that the President of the Republic and I agree that ideally they should have "deliberately perverse" subdivisions (like old-school European, especially British, money) rather than dull decimalness, but I'm sure we could argue for ages on what scheme is best.
I also want to reiterate that, while I would like these to be "backed" with hard-currency reserves - just so they are "real" money, rather than fake pretend money - they would not be intended for trade but for souvenir purposes. In token of that, they would be printed in very small quantities - perhaps no more than $100 US worth in circulation at any one time. Also, we should sell them to citizens at their real "backed" value, but to foreigners at perhaps 5 times that. (Citizenship should have its perks, after all!) This would cut down on negative attention from people who might be tempted to misuse them for currency speculation. I also note that, as someone has pointed out, private currencies are legal in the US, so as long as we keep the printing and the reserves in the US I don't see a problem.
Does someone want to check out how much it would actually cost to print, say, 100 banknotes to a design of our own liking?
5) OTHER IDEAS
- I really want a History of the Talossan Republic ready for Liberation Day 2008/V. I will be talking to GV about this more elsewhere. How about other books - a cookbook? A statistics yearbook? A guide to the flora and fauna of East-Side Milwaukee and Cézembre? Anyone keen to write any of that?
- badges with the Four Stars and "Citizen of the Talossan Republic" on them
- a very good official map - which will be someone sitting down with Google Earth and drawing lines on printouts, I suppose.
- an official Marcâ Telaragñheascâ (Online Shop) to sell some of this stuff and hopefully make big itrìns for the Republic
- a cuddly mascot! The Seneschál has recommended a polar bear in lederhosen waving our Four Star Flag. I think this is a great idea.
