Dermot | I have decided to take the Minister of Culture's advice and pursue the case for spelling reform here in the l'Icastolâ forum.
If Talossan is to become a modern, usable language then its most eccentric elements will have to be abandoned. Chiding people to adopt different personal computing solutions, which is the usual response, is not an answer. An attitude of complacency or condescension actively discourages discussion and does not address the problem.
Its time the language authorities in Republic and Kingdom started listening to beginners in Talossan, as well as potential students of the language, and propose a solution which reduces the complexity and arbitrariness of the accents-making it easier to learn and easier to use.
This is a practical problem in writing Talossan-but what about speaking it? I would be interested in knowing the actual level of correspondence between written and spoken Talossan-I suspect it is not high. To put it simply, can a casual reader or inexperienced student tell from seeing a Talossan word how it would be pronounced-with all the tics and wilful eccentricities imposed on the language?
Ladinstch should not be a joy to language geeks and a trial for the rest of us, if we are serious about making it less a minority enthusiasm and more a usable national tongue. Orthographic reform is not a magic bullet that will transform us all into speakers and writers-but it will help as part of wider progress in teaching and standardising the language.
