What OS are you running? If it's Windows, have you considered an applet like this one?

    http://quickkeydotnet.sourceforge.net/

I have it installed on one of the computers I use at work (although it's not usually running) and it seems to work pretty well. I haven't installed it at home because I don't want to confuse my wife. :)

Thanks. I'm running Linux on all of my computers, and the keyboards are set for the needs of programmers, i.e., the accent keys do not add diacritics to the vowels (as they would do on a German typewriter). On the other hand the keyboards' layout is German, so I can type the umlauts and the sharp s without much ado.

Ââ.. I found a solution... I defined a multi-key in the .Xmodmap file that lets me create nifty characters like the Swedish å with an extra keystroke. ¢ool. ĝis la revido... mwaha, I can type in Esperanto...

Pah, I can do that without any extra trouble at all but I can't stop the rain from falling. On my Mac at home all this is of course trivial except for the cursed Þorn... well, my Mac's no better at stopping the rain.

Not running Linux, I can't make a specific recommendation, but there must be an applet equivalent to Quick Key out there somewhere, I'd think. :-/
